What it is
Launched in January 2024, pump.fun lets anyone create and trade a memecoin with no code, no presale, and no team allocation. It has facilitated the creation of well over ten million tokens and, at the peak of the 2024 mania, accounted for a large share of all Solana transactions. The team behind it is pseudonymous.
How it works
Each new coin is priced by a bonding curve. Early buyers pay less; each purchase pushes the price up the curve, and sells push it back down, so a coin is tradable from the moment it exists. Creation is free (the original 0.02 SOL fee was dropped in August 2024); the platform earns a 1% fee on every bonding-curve trade. When a coin's market cap reaches roughly $69,000 it "graduates" and migrates to PumpSwap, pump.fun's native DEX.
The verdict
pump.fun is undeniably the most important product in this vertical, and its liquidity and attention are unmatched. But the numbers are brutal: data suggests around 98.5% of coins never complete their curve and effectively go to zero, and the platform is a magnet for spam and scams. It is a well-built machine for a fundamentally high-risk activity. Treat it as a casino, size positions accordingly, and never confuse launch volume with real value.
